Pie:
Tesco Finest 6 Deep Filled Mince Pies.
Cost:  2 Boxes for £2
Score:  64.7%

A nice looking pie, 4 steam holes so could be filled to the top with lovely filling?
Just about perfect sugar coating too. Nice large granulated sugar.
First impressions, oh dear!
Ouch, that pastry is too dry and too hard, verging on crunchy. Took me a second bit to find the filling, not a good sign. Filling ok, plenty of festive fruits, however the pie was only half full.... feel like I've been robbed a bit.
Over all not an enjoyable experience.

Mixed reports from the reviewing team, perhaps at least one of the boxes being passed it's Best Before date affected this test?

Reviewers Comments and Guessed Origin
"This pie will definitely make the top 3! Superb filling, touch runny but top marks in all areas. Definitely worth an investment."

"Almost the perfect pie. certainly a nigh on perfect tasting pie only let down by the paltry effort to look home baked. I have no idea where this came from, but I'd like to know so I can go and buy more straight away."

"The look & feel was impressive but the first bite was a  bit dry and seemed more pastry than filling.   A surprise given the amount of filling which was good. over all the pastry let this pie down "

"This is the Cheryl Cole of mince pies, you would have it anywhere, in the kitchen, tucked up in bed or have it at work and you wouldn't want to share it with your mates."

"Smelt like someone had been creaming mad like the 1950's - great smell of butter but not a lot else. This was the Mother Teresa of all pies - Size '8', modest to look at but full of wonderful treasures inside, great filling, a lick of brandy and butter and pastry that leaves you with a wonderful feeling inside. Thanks Mother Teresa.. Did you shop in Waitrose?"

"First bite was all pastry and I am not diminutive of mouth. The filling was nice, but not enough to counter that over thick pastry. These are finest Tesco has to offer."

"Another pie that looked good in the showroom but failed in the engine department, What a disappointment that large air pocket was. The pastry was nice and buttery and had a nice crunch to it. The filling lacked flavour and texture. Somerfield?"

"On the surface this was promising. It had the tell tale 'blow holes' of a quality pie, and whilst not over generous with sugar, it did posses sizeable granules. Thus, the shock of attempting to pile-driver my dentures through the concrete mass that pertained to be pastry was overwhelming. Even a sacrilegious dunk in the accompanying beverage didn't lessen it's the tensile strength. Sadly the rather delicious interior was overshadowed. If this pie was a chocolate bar it would be an armadillo. M&S."

"A decent enough pie - but nothing too special. The fork holes in the top are a nice touch - but aren't too important as we're eating it at room-temp. From somewhere like Tesco."

"Aldi? Akin to eating an air-filled rock. Granted, there was a small amount of tasty filling inside, but it was quite a mission getting there. I think I may have broken a tooth."

"Tesco - an average pie. Crust seemed a bit stale to me. The filling had a hint of brandy, but I could not get over the pastry."

"This was a corker, nice aroma pre-bite, confirmed by first bite of a very buttery, nutty texture pastry.  I really liked the somewhat crunchy and drier biscuit-like pastry of this pie, which is in contrast to some pies that have a greasy claggy texture.  This was a high ceiling pie, so I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the filling almost comes up to the pie lid, which is very unusual.  The filling was very tasty with quality ingredients which also has a nice texture, plus a dash of something (maybe alcohol taste).  All in all, a proper job - top ho - and if it's not Duchy Original then Prince Charles should hijack the recipe."

"After nearly breaking my tooth biting into the top - the rest of it didn't make it worth it. Horrible pastry - probably last years put in this years packaging.  Local shop brand probably budgens or londis.Filling OK but a bit nothingee."

Try the Tesco Finest mini mince pies. They are a class above their full sizad cousins - very nice indeed.

Enjoy reading your reviews, although I think maybe your criteria should be changed a little. Should sugar dusting really have its own criteria? Would it not be better to just form part of the score for visual presentation, texture and flavour. Also does pastry thickness have any real value of having its own score? As long as the thickness is in proportion to the rest of the pie then all is good. Also should pie cost not come in to the equation somewhere? Its all well and good making a great tasting pie, but if that pie cost twice as much as a good tasting pie should it not be marked down? Something to think about for next years criteria I suppose.

I've just eaten one and have to agree, the pastry is too dry and crispy, and the filling only 2/3 full! What makes me cry inside is the fact that this pie seems to be winning in the 2009 reviews! Think I'll stick to Mr.Kipling's cherry-Bs - festive season or not.

addendum: my other half has just rammed a wedge of mature cheddar in the filling gap - works a treat!

I felt that this was the 'Gold Standard' for pies in the last couple of years and have been very pleased with it this year. I was surprised by the lower rating for pastry as I feel it is the strong point of this pie!

The trouble is when you buy something from the \\\"finest\\\" range or \\\"the best\\\" your expectations are raised and this mince pie was actually quite disappointing. On the positive side tastewise the filling is actually pretty good with a good hint of booze and plently of fruit but it\\\'s a bit \\\"gloopy\\\" . When you add that to the heavy , thick pastry the overall result is a long way from the moist crumbly texture of a good mince pie
