Date:  25/11/2009
Pie:
ASDA Baked in Store
Cost: 4 Pies for  £1.50
Score:  64.73%

This pie was specially courierred from central London to Mince Pie HQ for testing today! (Many thanks Alex @ Freud)
It's the first 'desert' pie of the season towers above all the other pies so far this year.
A big simple pie, not clever designs, steam holes or sugar on the top. It's quite weighty in the had too... First impressions good, pastry just right, not to crumbly. Filled right to the top with a sweet but fruity filling. No sign of any alcohol in this pie, just fruity goodness.
All in all a good pie, not amazing but good.
Still if it's one the Good Housekeeping Institute Award it must be worth trying.

Reviewers Comments and Guessed Origin
"In my book, any pie that big deserves a high score. I was initially worried that the filling quantity might be a bit low, but it was almost to the top of the casing! All this pie is missing is the visual presentation - but thats really not that important. I've got no idea where these pies could have come from."

"Looked good, felt good, tasted good - I'd have another one!"

"Looks great, tastes better. Probably the best pastry I've had so far. Where's my sugar coating though? :("

"Morrisons - The best? A very buttery number, doughy pastry, just the way i like it, although not to every ones taste, a wonderful home made, deep-filled look which blew me away filling pretty soggy and wasn't solid enough, lack of flavour in the filling.. Shell from baywatch, filling from crimewatch.."

"Overall to much pastry and not enough filling. A pie perfect for those wanting to put on a lot of weight quickly!!. "

"Quite bland pastry and an awful lot of it. Fairly uninspiring filling, too, not particularly spicy, boozy, although a nice texture with enough liquid and large plump fruits. I wasn't enamoured with the looks, very plain, no sugar topping. This pie proves big isn't always better. "

"Sort of pie that isn't for the faint hearted. Not a lot of flavour, needs a boozy kick and slimming down. Main use for this pie would be in a shot putt competition, plenty of weight, not a lot else going for it."

"Taking hold of one of these, it is a big hefty beasty, and a rather rough and ready pie in appearance with absolutely no sugar grains. Pre-bite, it did smell very buttery with a hint of the fruity filling.  First bite and the pastry is moist and buttery and the filling is pretty tasty and well textured too - not a bad combination and although I personally prefer a drier more biscuit-like texture, the moister higher fat pastry will appeal to the broader masses.  Overall, this is a robust looking and tasting pie and for me, is something of a mixed bag.  If you were hungry, this one would satisfy, but it's maybe too hefty as a casual snack pie.  I'm guessing one of the mystery producers who have sent in a pie, but who is it? "

"The filling was quite good - another hint of booze to take it up a notch - but I felt the pastry left a lot to be desired. The pie quickly crumbled into a sticky mess and the too buttery pastry had an odd taste and left my fingers smelling the same."

"The shear size of this monster makes me guess some large bulk-buy establishment like costco?"

"This offering is the behemoth of the world of pie. You can't help but feel intimidated, but rather like Goliath there are weaknesses. Where was the sugar coating? And a snifter of brandy wouldn't have gone amiss. Aside from these limitations the filling delivered on quality and quantity. If this pie was a mythical hero, it would be Achilles. Harrods."

"This pie is still lodged in my gut, obviously getting its own back.  Nothing to commend it  "

"Very big pie, however not much filling and very little decoration. The filling itself was very tangy and fruity. "

"Wellington Farm Shop: Wow a whopper of a pie and a real treat! lovely filling and firm crust, really enjoyed this one :-)"

"What a big one! pastry was nice and buttery and the aroma was excellent, but where oh where was the sugar coating on that pie. Nice texture to the filling with a hint of booze. Still quite a gap between the filling and lid but all in all a good well round pie of which I would be willing to try again.."
