Reviews of Mince Pies available in stores during the 2007/2008 Pie Season.
Each review was conducted by an independent panel of volunteer tasters.
The review process was carried out as follows:
- Reviews were conducted 'Blind' with the identity of the Mince Pie kept secret from the tasters. (Note: As tasters took it in turns to buy the pies, one taster in each review knew the pies true identity).
Reviews were conducted with pies at room temperature, usually accompanied by a nice cup of tea. Where possible the tasters sampled the mince pies at the same time, so that age, humidity and dryness would not adversely affect the pies taste. Each Mince Pie was given a score of 0 to 5 (0 being low) on nine different criteria (devised buy the tasters). Each criteria was deemed to have equal weighting in calculating the Mince Pies Average Score or Total.

It was another one of those 'flat' pies or 'shallow' pies. Quite good looking with plenty of sugar on top. However it was really let down by the poor quality of the filling. Not much more I can say about it really..... and average pie.

Today's pie had a real 'Hand Made' feel about it.
Not very tall, but quite large diameter, mine looked a bit squashed!
It was quite hard to award this pie points, as there was little sugar coating or aroma or attempt at interesting presentation! However the filling was good, quite fruity and tasty.

What a lovely pie, we all seemed to enjoy it. The best pie of the season so far! It was baked specially for the Mince Pie Club, and delivered by courier. The only down site seems to be that it was not big enough! They can be ordered from the Bettys web site here . Lovely looking pie with a star on top.
Filling good, but a little too sweet perhaps?

This pie scored just 50.8%, when last year it scored 63%
So both Waitrose pies that we tested have scored less this year.... a worrying trend!
Generally we were not impressed by this pie! It was really let down by the sugar coating, scoring the lowest of any pie so far this year!

This pie was definitely a slim one.
Although it was Sainsbury's, Baked in Store, Shortcrust Mince Pie, it left people wanting more!
It scored the lowest on filling quantity so far.
This pie had a VFM of 1.38, kind of average.

Today's pie was quite a good one. It jumped in to second place of all the pies tasted so far this year! Most people liked this pie, with may of the Tasting Team giving their highest score yet!
