Reviews of Mince Pies available in stores during the 2009/2010 Pie Season.
This
year we want to expand the Pie reviewing process to Mince Pie fans
across the world. So we have added a Downloads section where you can
download you very own Pie review scoring sheets. We will still conduct
reviews by independent panel of volunteer tasters, but really want to
hear what you think of the pies.
We are also going to test some simple 'on-line' scoring.
The review process should be carried out as follows:
- Reviews
were conducted 'Blind' with the identity of the Mince Pie kept secret
from the tasters. (Note: As tasters took it in turns to buy the pies,
one taster in each review knew the pies true identity).
-
Reviews were conducted with pies at room temperature, usually accompanied by a nice cup of tea.
-
Where
possible the tasters sampled the mince pies at the same time, so that
age, humidity and dryness would not adversely affect the pies taste.
-
Each Mince Pie was given a score of 0 to 5 (0 being low) on eight different criteria (devised buy the tasters).
-
Each criteria was deemed to have equal weighting in calculating the Mince Pies Average Score or Total.

What a lovely 'hand made' looking pie with nice star design for the lid. Not a classic looking pie, but good. They did well to survive the post from Yorkshire! You can see my pie had a little rough edge where it was bounced by the post. Not much sugar or aroma. First impressions lovely. Soft moist pastry. loads of sweet and fruity filling. That pie was great. I could eat loads more of them.

Today's pie was small but quite good looking. A nice star design on the top and a gentle sprinkling on sugar made it look just nice. It was on the small side though and only just filled it's foil case. First impressions were disappointing, as the crust was quite thick, leaving not much space for filling. Despite it's thickness the Crust was nice and light, moist enough not to crumble. As there was little filling, it was hard to tell what it was like, no sign of any fruit. I'm left with quite a sweet taste in my mouth... not much else.... I won't be asking for another one.

It's the second time that we have tried today's interesting pie. Another 'Baked In Store' variety. Not a very tall pie, but a pleasant change from some of the mass produced pies. Presentation was subtle, light sprinkle of icing sugar. Though short, pie was a good weight so it felt like it was full. The pies also stacked rather well on the review plate... eat your heart out Ferrero Rocher! First bight was a delight. Soft, but slightly crunchy pastry. Sweet filling with some fruit. A very pleasant pie. In summary, flat but oozing goodness. Should I eat the last pie going spare.....

Today's pie was very good. Not amazing, but very good. Very well presented with both holy leaf design and crimped edges. Good sprinkling of granulated sugar and the granules stayed on the pie too. First impressions a little disappointing as the pastry was a bit dry/hard so there was too much of a crunch for my liking. The filling was excellent, a tad too sweet, but quite fruity with a good texture. The pie could have had a bit more filling, but it was OK. All in all a very good pie. Can I have another one please?

A home made look and taste to this vanilla scented pie, which had a generous dusting of caster sugar and large pieces of glace cherry in the mincemeat. Some tasty mixed peel, too. It was a large pie, deep and filled to the top, so despite the rather thick pastry it's well balanced. The filling tastes of Christmas, more so than any pie so far this year. The Best Mince Pie so far in 2009! http://www.bramleybakery.co.uk/

This pie was specially courierred from central London to Mince Pie HQ for testing today! (Many thanks Alex @ Freud) It's the first 'desert' pie of the season towers above all the other pies so far this year. A big simple pie, not clever designs, steam holes or sugar on the top. It's quite weighty in the had too... First impressions good, pastry just right, not to crumbly. Filled right to the top with a sweet but fruity filling. No sign of any alcohol in this pie, just fruity goodness. All in all a good pie, not amazing but good. Still if it's one the Good Housekeeping Institute Award it must be worth trying.

Another good pie today. Nice looking with interesting star design. Pie lid has quite a dome so might be full of air or filling. Sugar coating too, granulated sugar just what I like. Aroma interesting a hint of Brandy perhaps. Pastry a bit dry and crumbly, some of the pies already had cracked lids. First impressions OK, a bit crumbly. Oh dear it's less than half full what a shame. The filling was good, but there was just not enough of it! Quite fruity and the Brandy flavour leaves a rather nice after taste in your mouth.
Mmmm I could eat another one of those.

A nice looking pie, 4 steam holes so could be filled to the top with lovely filling? Just about perfect sugar coating too. Nice large granulated sugar. First impressions, oh dear! Ouch, that pastry is too dry and too hard, verging on crunchy. Took me a second bit to find the filling, not a good sign. Filling ok, plenty of festive fruits, however the pie was only half full.... feel like I've been robbed a bit. Over all not an enjoyable experience.
Mixed reports from the reviewing team, perhaps at least one of the boxes being passed it's Best Before date affected this test?

Interesting looking pie. Not sure that we have seen this one before. Must be abother new design for 2009. Very 'home made' look, like you have cut the pastry out with a pastry cutter at home, nice. Pie seems a good size to, so lets hope there is plenty of filling. No steam holes, and little sugar on the top. First impressions good, quite sweet (so no need for the sugar on the top) but traditional tasting filling. Pastry a little to dry and crumbly. Can I have another on please?

Well this is a pleasant surprise. An all new pie design. The star shaped hole is both festive and functional, There will be no problems with release of steam for this pie. So very a very good looking pie. Pastry was a little dry, but OK. The filling was very, very fruity. You could see and taste those festive fruits nice. A touch more brandy flavouring would have been good though.
All it all the best pie of the season so far. At last one that stands out from the crowd.

Quite an average score for the Mr Kipling pie. Often considered the 'reference pie' this year we were disapointed as the pie was dry and crumbly, with many of the reviewers getting a lap full of pastry! Mr Kipling please try harder!
