The Ten Best Mince pies

1 Partridges 95p each
The perfect pie for kitchen cheats as its chunky casing looks homemade. One Independent taster called the pie “all bag and no shopping”, but the orange-rind-packed mincemeat is excellent.

2 Waitrose £2.99 for 12
Mince-pie purists might baulk at these diminutive offerings. But, as the canapés of pie world, they would grace any party platter and are tasty enough for any festive soirée.

3 Harrods mini pie cube £7.95 for 12
These prettily packaged petite pies make an attractive (and flavoursome)gift for dieters, or those for whom a larger pocket of mincemeat is too much of a mouthful.

4 Asda 98p for six
At 13p a pie, these are as cheap as you’ll find – 12 for the price of a single Fortnum’s pie. They’re sweet and squidgy, look and taste like a mince pie should, and are perfect for bulk buying.

5 Duchy Originals £3.29 for six
While pleasantly short, the pastry on these offerings from Charlie’s farm is, said some Independent tasters, a bit too buttery. The mincemeat and almond filling is agreeably zingy, though.

6 Valvona & Crolla £4.99 for six
Handmade to a secret recipe passed through generations of the Contini family behind V&C, these pies are bursting with an almost savoury spiciness. The pastry is equally superb.

7 Clarke’s £6.50 for six
The bakers at Sally Clarke’s Kensington establishment hand chop all the fruit for these superb pies. The pastry tastes as good as it looks and the fruity mincemeat exudes complex flavours.

8 Konditor & Cook £4.65 for six
If your Granny can better the pastry on these delectable offerings, send me proof. The delicate mincemeat is not for fans of chunky fare, but its fruity aftertaste is suitably elegant.

9 Sharpham Park £6.50 for six
The dark pastry encasing these distinctive pies is made of organic spelt flour, which has a dense texture and nutty flavour. The mincemeat is packed with dried fruit and spicy richness.

10 Fortnum & Mason £9.95 for six
You’ll need a bib to eat these weighty, two-inch deep pies. Incredibly crumbly and topped with a crisp almond lid, dainty (or cheap) they’re not, but they just about make up for it in taste.
