Crisp sweet pastry pies filled with rich Mincemeat and sprinkled with a light dusting of sugar.
Today we have another pie from Aldi, their ‘Free From’ Mince Pie, that is Gluten Free. Often with pies like this, where the ingredients are limited for some reason, then the pie is missing something important. So we set our expectations low for this review.
As you can see there are only 4 pies in the box, but they are well packaged and sealed in cellophane to help keep them fresh. The pies are quite a good size and weight which is a pleasant surprise, you can see that the pastry is darker in colour than a regular pie. Our pie has a little filling that has escaped from under the lid, could this be a good sign that it’s full of filling? The light sprinkling or caster sugar finishes of the pi well.
First impressions were much better than we expected. The pie came out of its case well. It did put up more than expected resistance in that first bite, but we persevered and once past the initial pastry crunch were rewarded by a sweet mouthful of pastry and filling. The pastry is definitely on the crunchy side, then filling was quite sweet but very fruity. Overall a sweet but pleasant taste in the mouth.
Well done Aldi, for producing one of the best Gluten Free Mince Pies we have tasted.
