A very original looking pie today, the Star 'cut out' design on the lid looks good, and allows steam out during cooking. Stylish and practical. It's clear that some clever thoughts have gone in to the making of this pie. So the looks are good but my pie only had one grain of sugar on it's lid! most of the sugar had been shaken off the pies and was in the cellophane wrapper. The pie had quite a good aroma. First impressions were ok. The pastry was a little tough, the filling was ok but not fruity enough with little texture. The overall experience was OK. Shame really.

Reviewers Comments and Guessed Origin

“Asda extra special? Thick fruity filling with visible suet (to melt on heating), some crunch from the added almonds and a whiff of booze. The pie is let down by too thick pastry, it is moist buttery pastry, but there is too much of it and has led to that uncomfortable stuffed feeling – from one pie!”

“Fantastic pie let down only by the sugar coating. Presentation is cute. Pastry is pretty much perfect, as is the powerfully alcoholic filling. I can easily guess the origin of this pie as I have a pack waiting for me at home – Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference.”

“Good looking pie, size weight good, filling disappointed bit thick sticky. Thought the filling came right to the top by looking at the star bit of a con 1/2 filled when taking a bite. Aldi pie”

“Great all rounder. Pastry has improved since last year, still robust, however defintely more buttery than its predecessor. Only let down was the lack, and poor quality of sugar coating, about 6 large sugar granules. Im unsure on why so many brands shy away from the snowy icing sugar, which gets one into the Christmas mood. Sainsburys Taste the difference?”

“I reckon this pie came from George Best’s collection. Lack or sugar to counteract the booze. Having said that, decent each way bet!”

“like Greece this pie stands high on hope and hot air, but fails to deliver on any of it’s promises (keep your money) This pie looks interesting from far, but dig a little deeper and you will find a chewy filling with an odd texture (luckily it was only half full). Give this one a miss and head straight for Turkey”

“Neat pie with unusually large vent hole in shape of star from which nice filling smell emanates. There are a very few and sparodic sugar granules, and little detectable smell from the pastry. First bite does not disappoint though – nice balance of pastry of more a slightly moist variety with a richer more dense than normal tasting filling that has a hint of something more. The filling is pretty well textured and the pastry is a bit like soft shortbread though not that buttery actually. On balance I would say the pastry is not that special but this is made up for by a somewhat tasty and powerful flavoured filling. Pretty good as a package. ”

“Pastry was good on this pie, as it had that slight ‘crack’ when initially biting down. The fruit was above average, but not enough to put this in the ‘Stars in your Pie’ bracket. Would happily serve this to Lilly Allen, or some other B list celeb’, but not to the Queen or David Jason. Ho hum. Sainsburys?”

“Tasted like it had chopped nuts in the mincemeat which isn’t good. Otherwise ok pie. Is it Asda smartprice?”

“Tasted pretty budget. ”

“Wow, the filling was very rich….maybe too rich as is started off well and then got a bit overbearing. ”
