An unusual pie, but not what we are looking for in a Mince Pie. The taste is unique and a little confusing. We won’t be eating a second one!
As you can see from the photos today we have a Mince Pie with a Crumble top. There was a little debate about whether this could really be called a pie…. However as the mincemeat was completely covered and it said Mince Pie on the box, we decided that it could / should be reviewed.
Crumble top Mince Pies seem to be a worrying trend in the market this year, with manufactured desperate to draw attention to their pies through new and ‘innovative’ toppings. We think that they should get back to doing the basics well, good size, well filled, granulated sugar coated proper Mince Pies.
Aldi’s Crumble Mince Pies are pleasant to look at, the crumbled uneven top has a few golden flecks in it that catch the light for a pleasant effect. There is no sign of any sugar coating, granulated or powdered sugar.
It comes well packaged in a cellophane wrapper to keep the pies fresh. When we first opened the packaging the aroma was rather unexpected and unusual… a bit like old socks...which was disappointing.
First impressions were mixed. The Crumble topping was soft and gave way easily, but it did crumble quite a bit, creating a mess as we ate. We could taste the caramel but it was not overpowering, but more confusing getting in the way of the mincemeat filling, though not very salty. The filling was nice and fruity, bet we didn’t get any Christmas spice.
